During my Christmas break, I visited a friend and her family in Germany. We decided to pack up the car and head to Belgium for a day trip. Our destination was Dinant, and my main goal was to drink some delicious Belgian beer.
The town of Dinant is a straight shot west from Frankfurt, and we even passed through Luxembourg on the way. Not too bad…three countries in one day! The city’s landmark is the Collegiate Church of Notre-Dame, and it is also the birthplace of the inventor of the saxophone, Adolphe Sax.
It was snowing most of the day which made it a perfect winter day. We enjoyed more Glühwine (warm spiced wine), Belgian beer, and the famous Frites (we know them as French Fries). Here’s a bit of history…The poor people of the region used to fry small fish as a side dish, but one year the river froze and they couldn’t fish, so they decided to fry strips of potatoes. It’s also believed that they were called “French” because it was the official language of the Belgian Army at that time.
