The Pope Visits Galicia!

It’s an honor to be able to watch the live feed of the visit of Pope Benedict XVI in Santiago de Compostela. In the cathedral, seeing him kiss the children and touch the hands of those greeting him as he walks by gives me chills. As a Catholic, I can only imagine how those people must feel being so close to such a special person in our faith. What a blessing for those present, and what a treat for the city of Santiago, especially because this is a particuarly special year.

The city of Santiago de Compostela is the destination point for a very popular pilgrimage route. Tens of thousands of pilgrims travel the route each year. When the feast of St. James (San Tiago) falls on a Sunday, then that year becomes, what is called, a Jubilant year. During these years, the pilgrims number in the hundreds of thousands. This happens to be a Jubilant year, and makes the Pope’s visit that much more special.

The city is only a few hours away, but for me to get there, it’s quite a journey. With all the traffic/crowds, and my long trip last weekend, I decided to stay home. I’m kind of kicking myself, but I can’t be everywhere, and I can actually see everything on TV, rather than standing on my toes in a crowd all day. At least I have the feeling that I’m right there with el Papa and all the spectators. What a blessing!

    1. I feel silly for not going…but like I said, I can’t be everywhere. It was cool to have a front row seat in my living room, haha. Talk to you tomorrow!
