There’s Nothing Like a Familiar Face

I’m lucky enough to have a good friend doing the same program with me. Unfortunately she’s on the island of Mallorca, which is basically on the opposite corner of the country from me. We’ve been emailing, chatting and Skyping, but have been wanting to plan a trip together even before we left for the program in September. Last weekend was a national holiday, All Saints Day on November 1st, so all schools were closed. We decided that this would be the perfect long weekend and finally booked a trip!
Destination…Barcelona!

I took a late flight from Santiago de Compostela and arrived at the hotel at almost 1am Friday morning. It was a priceless moment when Mary opened the door to our room. We had huge smiles on our faces and immediately gave hugs. There’s nothing better than seeing a familiar face when you are away from home. Even though it was “late” (not really for Spanish time, as Mary described in her recent post) and we had to keep our voices down in the hotel, we stayed up for about an hour catching up on everything…you know how girls are :-)

We attacked that city like it was nobody’s business that weekend! I have so many pictures and events to give details on that I’ll split the trip into a few posts. Mary left one night early because she had to get back to school on Tuesday. My school elected to take Tuesday off as one of their floating holidays, so I decided to stay one more night in the big city. I have to admit that it definitely wasn’t the same without Mary. Traveling alone is something I haven’t done very much of. I’m a very independent person, but I’m very social as well, and I don’t think I’m much of a fan of solo travel. I definitely look forward to the next trip that Mary and I can take together.
